We take barges of city garbage out to see off the coast and dump it. Poisoning an ecosystem that literally keeps us all alive. How can we make decision like that. Do people hate nature and want to destroy it? We humans had no problem wiping out indigenous people either. The people that stopped us from taking action in the 80’s had to have a reason. 1) Anybody working in the dirty energy field would be scared to lose what they had so fought for their businesses and jobs. The economic theory that this a normal consequence of the markets, old things die and new things come along. We are always told that for the workers dismissed. But a business owner can do something the rest of us can’t. They can bribe congress to let us squeeze every ounce of fuel before switching. And with a few people saying it is in doubt, was enough to make people hate the idea. That and the fact that a Democrat provided a wake up call. That automatically made it questionable. Just like Obama. This could be fix by the accountants. All the need is a new ruling that companies have to take into consideration the cost of free air, water wild plants and animals and the opportunity cost by not using the free sun. We can all see there is a massive cost. They would also have to pay for disposing of their waste in a way that is better than dumping in in the ocean. People are so fascinated about Mars lately send the garbage there. This works quite well to change behavior. When FASB rules companies have to show the FV of stock options on their financial statements, companies stopped giving them to middle management employees. So millions of employees lost wealth. Ownership. That happend in about a year. How fast would companies turn if their costs skyrocket. First they would turn to congress to protect them as they have for the last 35 years. 2) The other group want to destroy the world so they can be taken to heaven. They believe Genesis in dominating all the earth which means killing it and treating in without respect. We destroyed the indigenous people everywhere we went. We imposed our arrogance on everything having come out the dark ages into a place where we thought we knew everything.
We are so confident in the power of free markets that most think it is the best we can come up with so figure interfering would break it. Now I am not an economist, but Paul Krugman is, and my thoughts and understanding of the subject closely match his. 30 years has proven there are negative consequences to following ideas from fiction. Most of the assumptions of how markets and economy works are wrong. So their conclusions are crap.
At times like this, you can tell them there is a problem and a solution or alternative, but it will take more and more to accept that before there is change.
