Don’t take their word for it!
I was in the largest IT shop in the country and a company that spent more on capital investment for networks that support the online world than any other company in America. It is the 4 horsemen FAAN+ others that have the worlds attention but there are many more that are racing at a pace faster than ever before, to get new technology in the market place first. In normal times, the negative scenarios do not get worked on until the sunny-days scenarios are tested and out. The underlying technology changes so quickly that a 2 year project is not worth doing. You would just have to start over again.
So do not assume that these hardworking, bright people are thinking about the cultural, educational, political, safety etc impacts. Peter Drucker, the famous Industrial Age mass production guru, once wrote that it takes almost 20 years for a new technology to be fully absorbed by society.[note] Peope who write about the Internet in the 90’s as if it was a separate revolution from today, but it has never stopped evolving. There was a financial bubble but companies are focused on replacing humans with machines and software. Period. Whenever you read or hear the term Digital Transformation, think: replace humans! It will happen faster and faster without external interruptions.
There is no going back to the mythical good old days. Humans have learned to use their imaginations to abstract information from nature and create a model that works apparently, the same way but can be represented by 0s and 1s or up spin down spin of a quark freeing humans to make the future themselves.
