FASB is probably the most powerful NGO you never heard about. It is a private, non-profit organization that sets Financial Accounting Standards. They determine what should be a cost, how it should be recognize on the financial statements. This also includes accounting for all the financial derivatives, stock compensation, employee benefits, pensions, health care.

For example, it’s rule on recognizing the expected cost of stock options for employees resulted in many companies limiting the grants to senior executives just when it was starting to be expanded and thus giving employees a share of the profits that they generated. Then the ruled retiree medical plans were hidden massive unfunded liabilities and had to be recognized unless funded. So bye-bye benefits employees.
So what would happen if they had to recognize the cost of air, water, land and waste of making a product.?
