America is exceptional….but not in a good way

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/08/17/every-county-in-america-ranked-by-natural-beauty/?utm_term=.18c5e14c32a8Top of the list for prisoners per capital, guns per capita and mass murders and regular? murders? We have many words for something as pervasive as murder in America.

I have a real issue with private, for-profit prisons. A fundemental feeling of the evil in such an arrangement between a government’s right to provide a safe place and the voters of a democracy. Introducing profit as an incentive is #corruption-in-design. I copied the data that showed the US having the most prisoners in the world in absolute terms. Regardless of population, we have more prisoners than any other country.

Then I though I might coorelate this with number of guns, murger rates, religion, sex, income….

Then I see a chart in some tweet that argued the opposite and showing the opposite of what I hypthsized in number of guns would correlate with number of murders. So back to my chart.

This was just by State in the US that refuted the post I had seen but the source was Mother Jones and I did not have the source. then I read the NYT article.

Then I read this NYT article that has the chart I needed this morning.

“In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate,” Dan Hodges, a British journalist, wrote in a post on Twitter two years ago, referring to the 2012 attack that killed 20 young students at an elementary school in Connecticut. “Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.” http://nyti.ms/2i9AtEH

Natural Born Killers and Leonard Cohens “The Future” soundtrack might say it more clearly. Or maybe not.
