The Secret to Happiness
Summary: in the shower today I was thinking about how Ben and I love watching soccer and I wondered why. Besides learning to enjoy it because all of my sons played it, it also has to do with the fact they show 45 minutes of un interrrupted action. What a pleasure.
Unfortunately, I watch a lot of TV. I am a divorced father who, thanks to our legal system that violates men’s consitutional rights, left me with lots of debt and no money. So I read books, watch DVDs and TV: all of which cost very little. I like sports, movies, outdoor programs and stuff on motorcycles and cars – racing and whatever. Speed channel basically.
I assume that most people also watch sports, at least men. Not sure what women watch: reality shows and contest shows probably. The problem is the number of commericals on these programs. For the big sporting events I have counted an average of 30 per hour!! Think about it. That is like someone standing over you every 5 to 10 minutes telling you:
your car isn’t that great
you aren’t drinking the right beer
your insurance costs too much
you should have gone to jeradds or whereever
you probably have an enlarged prostate
depression
allergies
insomnia
small dick
no hair
high collesteral, blood pressure and sugar
and you need to think outside the bun!
And you wonder why surveys show people are not anymore happy than in the past??
This is where Soccer comes in. They don’t interrupt the game for 45 minutes. No stupid ads telling you what stupid program is going to be on right after this. Nothing. It is amazing how relaxing and enjoyable that is. At half time, the comericals come on but you can leave knowing that the second half will start in 15 minutes or so.
I expect that this anomoly is doomed to be corrected by evil corporate eventually. It makes me think we should not encourage soccer in america: for as long as it remains a world sport, advertisers in America won’t consider it worthwhile. In my dreams, I imagine a world where all sporting events are handled this way. Advertisers have their signs at the stadiums and sponsors are on the uniforms but no TV comercials except at the regular periods. Football would only be interrupted 4 times at each quarter. That would improve the game for everyone. Have you atttended an NFL game live? There is more standing around than in a highschool dance!
